LETTERSc ----------Doing what’s rightEditor:. “Let there arise out of you a band of people inviting to all that is good, enjoining what is right, find forbidding what is wrong: They are the ones to attain felicity.” Holy Koran 3-104. The minimum wage level just be raised substantially across the board. They should be made equal to all entry level wages set by standard union contracts in every sector of industry both private and public. To offset the growing rate of inflation and ensure the basic economic and social necessities of life for the suppressed poor working class people. That have made America the world leader in industrial, military’ and technological advancement.Shakir Muhammad GreenvilleFew qualificationsEditor:The only apparent qualification necessary to become Mississippi’s State Medical Examiner is the ability to change your mind. Last November Dr. Emily Ward, Mississippi’s State Medical Examiner, positively identified human remains sent to her office as belonging to my 13-year-old daughter, Leigh Occhi, who has been missing since August 1992. This “positive” identification was made without Dr. Ward contacting all parties involved to insure that she had all the most recent and accurate dental records available. If my daughter’s dentist, Dr. Richard Warriner, had not personally intervened and contacted authorities himself to verify that the records they used were the most current, the mi-sidentification might never have been realized. Consequently, three days after the identification was made, Dr. Emily Ward changed her mind and retracted her office’s statements. She even went so far as to tell the media that no mistake had been made.I was not satisfied with her response, to put it very mildly, and repeatedly attempted to contact the Mississippi Attorney General’s office. They passed the buck to the Department of Safety Commissioner’s office. I was told by Commissioner Jim Ingram that the medical examiner’s office did fall under his authority. He apologetically promised a full blown investigation, the findings of which he would make sure I received. Surprise! Surprise! I have not heard nor received anything from the outcome of any investigation — if indeed there was one. Why am I writing this now, eight months after this fiasco? This same medical examiner just last week released to authorities that an 11-year-old girl had been raped before being strangled to death. A day or two later, she “changed her mind” about the young girl and said she hadn’t been raped. That image is not one that can be erased as easily as saying, “Oh, sorry, we made a mistake.” Rumors, speculation, and false reports about a loved one’s fate cannot be forgotten once placed in our mind. Believe me.What is the criteria for holding the position of State Medical Examiner? I’ve been told by authorities that it is based mainly on politics, not experience. That is quite evident. The people of Mississippi have a right to expect fully experienced and completely competent individuals filling these positions. Little can be done to ease the pain and suffering families experience in these cases — but we sure do not need the state of Mississippi to compound them with incompetence.Vickie FeltonTupelo, Miss.Where’s my protection?Editor:I sometimes forget I live in America where laws are to protect people. For years I’ve worked as a professional caregiver (9 V2 years, experience, 2 years AA. Degree and Certified-Child Care Worker Trainee). Recently, a new administrator said that the facility should run this way, but guess what, that way created more problems. When I voiced my opinion and offered suggestions, I was accused of resisting supervision. Although I was told my opinions were valued, my opinions resulted in my discharge. Where are the laws that protect workers who are wrongfully discharged when administrators feel threaten by workers who voice their opinion and offer positive suggestions? Personally, it’s wrong However, I’m doing OK.Henry Short Greenville
