by ENALD JOHNSON Plainsman Sports Editor Amidst one of the many delays in Sunday night's racing program at State Fair Speedway, the pit crew on Dennis Selting’s number 18 Chevrolet Camaro changed gears. The hasty mechanical work came early in the late model feature race and Selting, a Huron car salesman, said the change proved to be wor thwhile Selting’s car clicked to perfection in the earlier races as he ran away with his heat race and and then finished second in the trophy dash behind Bruce's’ Roger Saathoff, who had won the other heat race. But with such hotshoes as Saathoff and Harrold's Sheldon Reding eliminated from the feature because of an accident prone dry-slick track, Selting felt he had room to experiment . “We changed gears during one of the red flags,” said Selting. “‘We wanted to see how high we could gear the car and still make the car pull. We were experimenting for the KIV race.” To experiment with most of the feature race still ahead of him, was Selting bubbling with confidence? ‘Very much so,” he replied. “I don’t know if we would have experimented if both of them (Saathoff and Reding) had still been on our tail. Them being out of the race gave us some room to ex periement. We did it and it worked out for the best.’ The last 15 laps of the 25-lap feature, called the NAPA Echlin Ignitor, went off without any major problems and Selting gradually pulled away from the field to win easily, gently taking his car around the dry-slick track. ‘The last 10 laps we ran without brakes. Something in the master cylinder system let go.’ Selting said, two weeks every more im pressive was the fact that he ended the race on a flat tire. Selting, Al Nordstrom of Aberdeen and Dennis Gross of Huron were one-two-three on the third lap of the feature and they stayed that way the rest of the race. Fourth went to Dallas Lafferty of Reliance and fifth to Jim Schmidt of Flandreau. Like Selting, Doug Myers of Pukwana won his second straight feature race in the sportsmen division, topping a five-car battle for the top spot. Dave Marlow of Redfield took runner-up honors, followed by Huron drivers Randy Hickle and Robbin Smidh and Harrold's Brad Barnes. Hickle got by Smidh for third on the last lap of the race. Myers, found legal in a protest one week ago, enjoyed a perfect night by also winning his heat race and the trophy dash, Jamie Selting's STREET STOCK And to make Selting's Heat; 1.
