MATSONBillings Soldier is Killed in KoreaUnofficial word was received in BHiiugs Monday that Private Gary E Matson was killed in Korea while serving with the Third combat engineer battalion. If confirmed his battlefield death will be the first for Billings hi the Korean war. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gary J. Matson, 8081 Hawthorn lane.Word of the Billings soldier's death was received In a letter from his combat headquarters by an officer who wrote, “l am forwarding personally Gary’s address bock, a Xexv letters, and his drawing Instruments. I took the liberty of looking at his address book, which is more than an address book; It is a soldier's philosophy sketch book. In it is a letter which he started but r.cver mailed. Your son was evidently an artist atheart . . . I wanted to make surethat you received that which isthe tangible remains of histhoughts. I am not In the position to give you any details, otherwise I would do so.Private Matson was bom in Livingston. Dec. 7. 1530, and moved to Billings In 1937 where he attended grade and high school. Before entering the army in September 1949, he was associated with his father in business.Private Matson spend his last leave ir. the states during the Christmas holidays last year. He went overseas on February',14, 1950. While in service he did cartooning and art work for army publications. He was studying refrigeration in Japan before being transferred to the Third engineer combat battalion after the outbreak of the Korean war.The last letter received by ids parents, two days before the death notice, was dated July 18. and was written from somewhere where lie had been eating, sleeping and living in a jeep.Surviving are his parents and a sister, Mrs. G. V. Kittleson of 8L6 Third Street west.
