Mid-State Region. Schering Labs, and Aberdeen Coca-Cola Bottling Co.. was held at Pinehursl Lake Manna in Pinehurst on July 22. Area children with asthma, including those from Richmond and Scotland counties, participated in a day of fun-filled and educational activities.Dr. William Stewart of Sandhills Pediatrics served as camp physician, and BJ. Goodndge of Pinehurst Allergy and Asthma was camp director. Numerous lifeguards and volunteers were also onhand to assist with the various water and game competitions.The children, ages 5-12, were provided with lunch, snacks, takc-homc gifts, and American Lung Association-produced educational materials. In addition to a presentation on coping with asthma by Dr. Stewart, the participants also enjoyed a visit with Patty Wilson, clinical psychologist, and a tour” of a Moore County EMS vehicle.More than 2.5 million children have asthma, and many others have hidden or undiagnosed asthma Asthma is one of the most common causes of school absenteeism due to chronic disease. Recent studies indicate that asthmamay be more prevalent in children and adulut than it was 20 years ago. The reasons for this arc not entirely clear, but are probably related to hereditary factors and the heavier exposure to allergens, pollution and irritants.
