By ANDREA FERRETTI (Staff Writer) The Galesburg Human Rela tions Commission has found in cidents where a doctor for a lo cal industry may be unjustly failing job applicants on their physicals. Louise Wilder, director of the commission, said she has re ceived four or five complaints from handicapped persons who have been unable to obtain em ployment because of the doc tor’s physical. In at least three of these cases other doctors have said there is nothing physically wrong with the job applicants. One woman sought employ ment, took the physical’ and failed it. She then went to a spe cialist, who said there was noth ing which should prevent her from obtaining the job. The specialist then called the doctor in question and told him his findings. The woman stil l did not receive employment. One applicant passed a physi cal for another company on June 3 but two months later the doctor, who has allegedly been violating the Handicap Act, failed the same person. The applicant had a weight prob lem, Mrs. Wilder explained. But he had not gained any more weight over the two ae period between physi cals. “There are many ways to dis criminate. I want to be sure people in the community are getting a fair shake,’’ she add ed. The commission is further in vestigating the complaints and eventually will submit results to the attorney general, she said. Remains Secret Mrs. Wilder would not reveal the names of the applicants, the doctor or the company. Under the equal opportunities fact for the handicapped it is unlawful to discriminate against a handicapped person unless it can be shown that the particular ' handicap ' prevents the performance of the employ ment involved. . “We're going to make this l doctor aware of the Handicap Act, Mrs. Wilder asserted.
