1UWW, AMUINA, AU^USJ y( 17/U4New Race Route Has 'Everything'Pueblos Officials Endorse Jeffs Great Cycle DerbyBy JEFF SMITHIt is with bo small amount of pride that the Daily Star announces that its first annual Fat Derby and Smog Free Three has been taken unto the municipal breast and adopted as the City of Tucson’s Official Downtown Bicycle Race.Pretty good, huh?Not only that, but the week previous to the Great Event, Sept. 7-13 has been declared by the mayor and council as Tucson Bicycling Week. Also pretty good. The actual mechanics of the race have been altered somewhat since the event was first announced in this space a few weeks ago. The date — Sept 13 — is the same. The time — S a.m. registration, 9 a.m. start — is the.same. But we’ve added another race for the zealots with the super sew-up tire bikes, and moved the course a block west. The original route, which ran by the Star building at 208 N. Stone Ave., was deemed impractical by city police and traffic engineers. Stone Ave. is a state highway and it takes an act of Congress to block it off.So we’re going to start the races on Church Ave., runnorth to where Church curves into Court Ave., go south on Court to Washington St. and turn left back to Church. It should be a good course because it takes you past a niceMexican restaurant, plenty of vacant lots to park your bicycles, and under the shadow of at least one good saloon. To reiterate the other particulars, the race will beopen to anyone. There will be four separate class races: Over 3D wide open, under 30 wide open, the Fat Derby for downtown businessmen, and a longer, hairier sprint for the for-real bike racers. This last Is done in the interests of safety! fairness, and giving the great unwashed a chance to see what 45 miles per hour on a bicycle looks like. The first three races will run to approximately three miles each — give or take a half-block. The last race, or “coup de grace5’ as the French call it, will be longer, probably 10 or 15 miles.Though Yours Truly mustneeds depart feu* the coming fortnight to defend God and country from predatory rodents in the wilds of Ft. Hood, Tex., they shall also serve who only stand and wait.Meaning that attorney Bob Hirsh, race co-chairman, Bill Wight of our promotion department, and Jim Hoppers-tad of Russell and Sheperd, will remain in Tucson to make ready for the festivities.Entry blanks and high-powered promotional spots will shortly appear in the Star and around the local bike shops, so grab one or clip one out and mail it — along with any box tops, bottle tops or pop tops you deem Biting—to wherever the blanks tell you.But above all, don’t miss the race. It’s your big chance to do your bit for clean air and physical fitness, Jhave a little fun and see wbat Mayor Corbett is really like on a bike . (Yes friends, the mayor and numerous other government luminaries have promised to put in appearances.)So don’t blow it.he First Edition Does SoundtrackTo*WorldOfWheek
