The minutes of the first township trustees meeting carry a da'te of Jan. 22, 1876.Barney Mills was the first president of the trustees and A. P. Searle was clerk. A. B. Holmes and J. W. King were also trustees.The men set the following daily wage rates for township work: For a man with hoe, ax or spade, $1.50; for man with team and wagon $3.00; for olow 50 cents.April 21, 1878 a tornado hit the area, killing Theodore Breach and injuring several of his family. The trustees allowed funds to pay the funeral expenses and $2 a week for care of each of the injured. J. M. Sears was president and O. H. Allison, clerk at that time.In 1882 township voters turned down a 5% tax levy to bring the Des Moines Northwestern, railway from Panora to Sac City and through Eureka, with the idea of starting a town near where Schal-ler now stands. The vote was 21 for and 47 against.Within a ‘/ear the railroad had come through here without paying any inducement from Eureka township.
