Event showcases life and career of baseball Hall-of-Famer XENIA — Roberto Clemente ranks among the best baseball players of all time. Among his many accomplishments in his professional career, Clemente earned 12 Gold Glove Awards, 4 National League batting titles, 12 All-Star Game selections, and 2 World Series Championships. Clemente’s name is written on cornerstones of schools, hospitals, and other public buildings, etched on monuments and statues, struck on coins, imprinted on collectibles and book covers, and inscribed on the hearts of millions of people around the world. Now there is a Smithsonian traveling exhibition to honor the life of this great player. “Beyond Baseball: The Life of Roberto Clemente” opens at the Xenia Community Library, 76 East Market Street, on August 16 where it will remain on view through October 12 before continuing on a 20-city national tour through 2012. The Xenia Library is the only loca tion in Ohio to host the exhibit. The exhibit high lights Clemente’s baseball career and the other achievements of his life. Clemente showed signs of athletic ability from an early age and always had a great love for base ball. In 1952, he was offered a professional baseball contract directly out of high school and began play ing in the Puerto Rican professional league. It was not long, though, before this young talent was snagged by an American recruiter. Clemente signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1954 and reported for duty to their top minor league team, the Montreal Royals. Shortly after his debut in the minor league, he was picked up by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1955 and he played there for eighteen seasons. In addition to his career in America, Clemente played fifteen seasons in the Puerto Rican professional league and won the Caribbean Series on two occasions. Clemente was gifted in both offense and defense on the baseball field. On the offensive end, his base running and batting average of over .300 made him a force to be reckoned with, and on defense he was unrivaled in the right-field with his quick reflexes and foot speed. Clemente’s career continued to flourish and was honored as the National League MVP in 1966 and was elected to the Hall of Fame posthumously as the first Latino American to be inducted. Be sure to visit “Beyond Baseball: The Life of Roberto Clemente” at the Xenia Community Library to learn more about Roberto Clemente and his professional baseball career. Beyond Baseball: The Life of Roberto Clemente was developed by the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico with the Carimar Design and Research studio, and organized for travel by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. The exhi bition was made possible by the generous support of the Smithsonian Latino Center. Clemente
