The Red Cross in Massachusetts and Utah ran out of blood last week, and although weekend appeals eased the problem, United Press International reported that a shortage still exists in those two states and other areas of the nation. But the situation is much better locally. Dr. J. 8. Hayhurst, director of the Blood Bank of San Bernardino, and Riverside Counties, acknowledged that during the summer season “it is more difficult’ to obtain blood but “we have no shortage. ‘‘We have redoubled our efforts to obtain blood by calling in regular donors,’’ Dr. Hayhurst said the blood bank hasn't had a critical shortage since it instituted its present donor program in 1967. The blood bank supplies 33 hospitals with blood, he noted. But Dr. Hayhurst acknowledged that ‘there is always a blood supply Shortage” to a certain extent because blood “lasts only 21 days and you can't build up a big inventory. “We have to replenish the supply every day,” he said. Dr. Harold Yanamura, director of laboratories at San Antonio Community Hospital in Upland, said ‘we are very fortunate’’ not to be in the “terrible situation they have in Utah and Massachusetts. ‘Our blood bank director (Dr. Hayhurst) has developed a roster, and as the supply runs low, donors are called in,” Dr. Yanamura said. ‘We have a record of our donors’ history, and we know that our donors are healthy and that their blood is good blood,” he said. The blood supply was also reported to be adequate in Los Angeles County.
