MIDDLESBORO BUSINESS MEN.We were informed a few days back that a number of the men working at the Brewery form clubs and order the greater part of their groceries and wares from Cincinnati, Chicago and other places, We were talking to a local furniture dealer the other day and he estimated that there were over $500 in accounts in this town today with furniture people in Chicago and other large cities where they carry .-on this installment sale business. This is a problem for the business men of Middlesboro to ihiuk about. Whose fault is it that these people are trading away from home? Whose fault is it that these people send their money out of town to help the out-of-town merchant? When sickness, distress and need fail upon him, he is upon the mercies of his home people to give him assistance. The problem is an open one, one to-be looked into and discussed by the business men of our town and find out just where the cause is and what will affect it. Could it be that tbe merchants and grocery men of Middlesboro are demanding too high a price for their goods? Could it be that the business man oT Middlesboro has fallen asleep and forgotten to advertise his goods and present them to these people in such a forcibly way, that they would take pride in trading athome?.We believe that we are estimating it very closely to say that the profits of goods bought out of Mid-. dlesboro for one year will be over $25,000, enough to run a half-dozen or more stores .and give employment to at least 50 people, thereby increasing our population by at least 200.'While the Middlesboro Board of Trade is waiting for a report on the freight rate case they may use their idle time in investigating these conditions. In the meantime the merchant may wake up, put some secret service man in the field and find out just how much his Chicago and Cincinnati competitor is sharing with him in the sales made to his next door neighbor. It would be impossible to buy -everything at home, but a man. should buy from his neighbor whenever he could if he had what he wanted and the prices were in reason. It means a whole lot to trade at home. Home is the place where we get accommodations,, when we ■can't get them' anywhere else, and! ffmisfortune should overtake you, your home merchant has l» contribute to your needs and the mailorder merchant does not even, have an expression of sympathy for you..These things count in hsme-beflding and no business mam in Middlesboro cam get around them. When there is a church to build,, a school bn tiding, streets,, sew era, public buildings, anything of public improvement, the home: business man does it and not the mall'order business man. From these ini: provements evesy individual gets a benefit, and we feel if prices are a little high you owe it to your town to patronize home industry.
