The subject of the above photo gravure is Mr. Samuel Orchard, of the town of Durham, and who is now plying his business in the town. He was born in the year 1825, in Weekton, England, near Land's End, Cornwall, and came to Canada when about sixteen years of age with his parents. They settled in the town ship of Egremont, Co. Grey, then a wilderness, and hewed out for them selves a good home in the then forest. The family then consisted of four sisters and five brothers, of whom the above subject was the youngest but one. The father of the family died in Ohio, U.S. A., shortly after they settled in Egremont, and the boys cleared up and cultivated 500 acres in the neighborhood of ** Orch ard,” the most of which still remains in the family or their descendents. The only surviving brother is in London, Canada. Mr. Orchard car ried the second mail from Owen Sound to Fergus, where he delivered it to Mr. Jas. Webster, the Post master, who was the father of Mrs. G. L. McCaul, of this town. The above Mr. Orchard has two children viz. Mr. S. T. Orchard, of Holstein, and Miss Orchard at the home here. Mrs. Orchard is still alive and hearty and though Mr. Orchard is seventy six years of age, he is strong and vigorous, every day doing work that would puzzle the young men of the rising generation.
