Jolm G. McCurry in the chair, and J. F. Croft, Secretary pro. tem.It was moved bv A. G. McCurry, Esq., that the delegates chosen in pursuance of resolutions passed at last meeting, proceed to nominate a candidate to represent Hart county in the next Legislature. Carried.The roll of districts being called, the following names were handed in as delegates:1112th. John 15. Benson, John Peek, LeeLinder, W. II. Stephenson, A. G. McCurry.1113th. A. S. Turner* J. A. Sanders, James B.Alford.On account of irregularity in the selection of the Reed delegates, it was moved by James Alford that the delegation from Reed Creek be rejected by the party. Said motion was opposed on the ground that the legality of the election of the Reed Creek delegates would be a question for the consideration of the entire delegation when convened in private session. After considerable discussion on the part of Rev. Calvin Sanders, John II. Skelton, Esq., and others, for the motion, and Rev. B. Thornton, A.G. McCurry, and others, against it, themotion was lost.It was then moved by John II. Skelton, Esq., that the nomination be postponed until the first Tuesday in September, and new primary elections be held.After much discussion, John H. Skelton, Esq., withdrew his motion, at the same time announcing that he w ithdrew from the Convention.While the roll of districts was again called, the delegates from the respective districts retired to a private room for the purpose of proceeding with the nomination.In the nominating bodv were twentv-• * • •nine delegates, there being some absentees, and four of the delegat s from the 1110th district refusing to participate allcr the withdrawal of J. II. Skelton, Esq.Captain John Peek w as elected Chairman, and Tlios. N. McMullan Secretary. On motion of Jolm B. Benson the Reed Creek delegates were admitted.P. P. Rroffitt, Esq., move-1 that the one delegate present from the 1119th district cast.'the full vote. Alter discussion, lost.On motion of A. S. Turner, the two-thirds rule was adopted.On motion of Lee Linden, the Convention proceeded to nominate by ballot.The first ballot was as follows: F. BHodges, 15; J. F. Craft, 11 ; John II. Skelton, 3.Second ballot: F. B. Hodges, 11; J. F. Croft, 11 ; A. G. McCurry, 6.Third ballot: F. B. llodges, 7; J. F. Croft, 11; A. G. McCurry, 8; J. II. McMullan, 2.Fourth ballot: F. B. Hodges, 6; J. F. Croft, 4; A. G. McCurry, G ; II. E. Sadler, 11; Elijah Chapman, 1.On the fifth ballot the name of Mr. John B. Benson was proposed, and the followingwas the result: J. B. Benson, 22: Hodges,2; Croft. 2; McCurry, 1 ; Peek, 1.On motion of A. G. McCurry, Esq., the nomination was made unanimous.The delegation having reported the result of their action, a committee of three were appointed to wait on Mr. Benson and conduct him to the hall. While this committee was out the following gentlemen were elected delegates to the Congressional Nominating Convention, which convenes at ‘1 | Thomson 6th of September next: RufusE. f Sadler, and A. G. McCurry, Esq. The delegates were empowered to select their own alternates.The committee appointed to notify Mr. Benson of his nomination escorted him to 1- the stand, and in a short but most graceful address he thanked the convention for the honor, and accepted the standard so spontaneously tendered him by the people of the county. The Convention having thus harmoniously conducted its deliberationsand auspiciuously ended them, adjourned.John G. McCuky, President, s. J. F.
