“ ' July 16.A ••;Extract of a letter from Utica, Nexv-YorkState, June 22.At the court of oyer and terminer, held in this county lad week, Robert Hazard oF Rome, laborer, was conviflcd of forgery, and fentenced to the (late prifon For life. He leaves behind him an affcOionate wife, (fhe is by law no longer his wife) and three or four fmall children. At the fame court, George Peters, an Indian of the Broihertown tribe, was convifled of the murder of his wife. The proof againft him was full and convincing; and the murder appeared to have been committed in a mod cruel and barbarous manner. Judge Kent, who prefidcd and delivered his fen-tence, explained to him the nature of the crime and of the fentence, in a manner at once plain, full and pathetic. This impref-five fentence cannot fail to have confidera-ble effeCl upon the feeling and future con-du£t of a number of the principal men pre-fent of the tribe to which this Indian belongs. It was calculated to fhew them the energy as well as the rieceffity of the law’s by which we are governed. This convi£l wfti b« executed on the lafl Friday in Augud next.“ Some little doubt was at firfi entertained, whether the Brothertown Indians were amenable to die laws of £he dale for offences committed amongd themfelves; but a recurrence to their hidory, evinced them to be mere remnants, of various Atlantic tribes.which were conquered and modi) ed by the early European emigrants; who had led all tertitorial and national fovereignty, anti renounced all right of felf government and cognizance of offences, and had for a century been fubjefled to the laws of the date in which they had redded.
