Calgary Zoo announces Asian elephant is pregnantCALGARY — When Dave Percival watched Kamala give birth to her 150-kilogram baby 13 years ago, he never thought he would witness such a miracle a second time.Kamala’s daughter, Maharani, also known as Rani, is five months pregnant.“I’m going to have my camera and everything, because it just doesn’t happen very often,” said Percival, an elephant keeper at the Calgary Zoo.Rani’s baby is due in 17 months and is expected to weigh well over 90 kilograms at birth. The mother-to-be may gain over 450 kilograms during her pregnancy but lead elephant keeper, Bob Kam, says the staff will keep her moving and active.Rani, one of three female Asian elephants at the Calgary Zoo, is beginning to show mammary development, which was the telling sign for the keepers that she was expecting.Asian elephants are classified as an endangered species. There are 28,000 to 42,000 remaining in the wild in central and southeast Asia.
