One of the most interesting versions of the deer situation that has yet been advanced by men who should know, comes from “An Elk County Hunter,” who, like so many other sporsmen of this section, is opposed to the state game commission's plan for decimation of does next Decem ber. He declares that many deer died from eating too much salt, then drink ing water, and urges that the state arrange to provide the deer with a proper supply of salt at all times in order to avoid a repetition of the deaths. His letter is as follows: DuBois, Pa., Aug. 4, 1928. Editor, DuBois Morning Courier: In reply to a few lines written by Stony Jefferson sometime ago in re gard to deer dying in Medix Run and vicinity. I have been a hunter for forty-two years, and I would like to have Mr. Jefferson or Mr. Kelly or any of the rest of them show me a deer that died from starvation when he could get his feet on the ground. I do not dis pute their word that deer die, but with the amount of deer in the State of Pennsylvania there is a reason for them dying—disease of some kind may have gotten into the herd and caused them to die. spring of the year when deer are killed by innocent fishermen; they come into the woods, camp, and when they get through and are ready— break camp, they all have a box of salt and they take it out and scatter it along the ground; along come a flock of deer, five or six, maybe more, very ravenous for salt, having had none all winter; they lick it up, wan der down to a stream, get a drink of water, and don’t get very far until they are dead. I have examined these deer while still warm, cut them open, and found them full of green water, which is natural from the salt and green stuff they had eaten and the water they had drunk, but they had not died from starvation by any means. There is only one thing the deer are starving for in the State of Pennsyl vania and that is salt, which should be given to them systematically. If the Game Commission would buy hun dreds of carloads of salt and distrib ute it back in the mountains so that it would be distributed systematically and not thrown out where the deer can get all they want, but put in the ground so that when they dig for it they get enough dirt mixed with it so that the salt doesn’t hurt them.
