Railway andWent to WorU for the Missouri Pacific in 1881 andWas Later With Katy \iPeter Rockwell, one of the most!widelv known railroad men in theh ! middle west, died last evening at histhome, corner of Fifth and Lafayetteistreets, death resulting from a complication of diseases.Mr Rockwell was bOrn in WestVirginia May 29. 1824. and his earlyi[)life was spent on a farm until the ageiof sixteen years, when he entered thesservice of the Baltimore and Ohio rail-troad as a day laborer, receiving 87 ^►! cents per day for his services. After4tserving for throe vears in the abovecapacity lit* was appointed section3 t^ ! foreman of the same road, which place:»1I he held until 18.77. when he removedto Bloomington. 111., and located, andswas given the position of roadmasterof the territory between Dubuque andCentralia on the Illinois Centra! railroad. This position he held until hiscoming to Sedalia September 1. 18S1.at which time he was given the posi-i:tion as general road mast er of theMissouri Pacific between St. Louisi and Omaha, Neb., and all the variousbranches of that road between thos#cities. He was at all times a mostcompetent official and held the abovenosition until the time the Katv went lt;into the hands of receivers, when Ikaccepted a like position with the receivers in charge ot the territorynorth of Denison, which position heheld until after the receivers had re-4tired, at which time the office of gen- {,era! roadmaster was abolished and he j.twas assigned to the Hannibal division q*! as roadmaster and held that position vI!until September, 19o::. when he was (compelled to retire on account of fail- a• « «*« II ing health.Mr. Rockwell was wedded at Mar- ttinsburg, Va.. to Miss Mary E. Court- qney in 185k and is survived by one json. Charles H. Rockwell, who is schief time keeper for the Katy in thenlocal offices. Mrs. Rockwell preceded (jher husband to the grave on March 5.1904.wflt;The following brothers and one sis- j u ter also survive Mr. Rockwell: DavidRockwell, of Pa ton. 111.; John \V.oRockwell, of Bloomington. 111.; E. 1Rockwell, of Streator, 111., and Mrs.Lizzie Benjamin, of Paxton, 111.;Mr. Rockwell had been a life-long i Umember of the Methodist church and*iuntil his recent illness attended ser-Ivices regularly at the First M. E.ichurch in this city. He was truly a S goodly man and his friends, who are!almost beyond number, sincerely! ?*mourn his death.Besides being a member of theMiAMethodist church he was affiliated nwith the Sedalia lodge No. 236, A. F.tlt;and A. M., and was a Knight Templar, and also a member of Remember-5]vlt;ance lodge. I. O. O. F., at Blooming-ton. 111.i wThe funeral will be field Monday af-| tternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the FirstM. E. church under the auspices of;the Masonic order, and he will beburied in the city cemetery under the b}rites of that order.The pall-bearers will be selectedbfelfrom the Masons, the I. O. O.
