LETHBRIDGE HERALD — FORT MACLEOD The Red Coats will ride with pride in Fort Macleod on Thursday. It’s the 140th anniversary of the arrival of Colonel James Macleod and the North West Mounted Police (NWMP), and the town has a day long celebration planned. In 1874, Colonel Macleod and the NWMP established the first fort along the banks of the Oldman River and the first law force in the area along with it. They were instrumental in bringing order to the previously lawless region, and laid the foundation for the peaceful settlement of what was then known as the North West Territories of Canada. Fort Macleod began to thrive, and along with it, came the formation of the province of Alberta. “We are so excited to have this opportunity to come together as a community to celebrate the rich history of Fort Macleod,” said councillor Trish Hoskin in a press release. “We have so much to be proud of here: our town; the legacy of such historical significance for the country; and most importantly, the people of Fort Macleod.” With singers, drummers, dancers and a grand finale by the world famous “RCMP Musical Ride,’ there will be something for everyone to enjoy. Beginning at the Fort Museum, a free barbeque will be held for the public at 12:30 p.m., followed by 18th century clothing and weapons demonstrations, a South Alberta Horse Artillery cannons display and musical rides by the Fort’s own horses and riders. “The Last Hoorah Before the Law Comes to Town” takes place on Main Street in the Queen's Hotel block at 3 p.m. Local musicians and singers will entertain, including Skyanna Highland, Silhouette Can Can and Aboriginal dancers. Then at 4 p.m. the “March to the Barracks” commences. The Fort riders, led by the Lethbridge Fire Department's Pipes and Drums Brigade, will commemorate the arrival of the NWiMP by heading west down Main Street to the NWMP 1884 Barracks Provincial Historic Site. The event winds up at Midnight Stadium at 5:30 p.m. with more entertainment, Smokin’ Aces trick riders, Leon Goodstriker's Indian Games, and the RCMP Musical Ride grand finale, featuring a full troupe of 32 horses and riders. Tickets for this portion of the event are $10 for adults, $5 for students (6-17) and seniors (60-80), and free for those under six and over 80. Family passes are also available for $30.
