Fears Discovery of 12-Year Sec ret In U.S. Army Draft TOLEDO, ©., Aug. 6—Fear the army physical examination might disclose the 12-year secret of her sex and she might be apprehended as a slacker was believed by police today to have caused “Samuel Bec kerman,” a woman, to end her life by drowning, “Samuel Ackerman” had posed as a man and successfully supported herself, and, for a time, a “wife,” through a man's work. But the army draft threatened exposure. Al though only 29 years old, “Samuel Ackerman did” not register. Police believe the idea of “becoming a wo man’ again was repugnant to her. With no alternative left, she killed herself. This theory was given additional weight by a letter, unsigned, found on the body, which indicated she wished even in death to keep her secret. The letter: Dear Brothers and Friends— On my last day I come to you. You shall do the right thing by me, I have no one to claim my body. Tama Jew. If wish you to bury me as you will find me Good-by to all. “Ackerman,” whose real name is unknown, was for a time an optic ian. At another time “he” was em ployed by the city as a water meter reader, “Ackerman’s” wife, a New York girl, obtained a divorce two years ago, nine years after the marriage. Now she is Mrs. Sarah Wise, the mother of a 11-year-old baby. Wise kept callers from his wife today, in sisting no one could see her, “Sarah Ackerman’s’ petition for di vorce from “Samuel Ackerman,” was filed in common pleas court here April 8, 1914. The plaintiff charged neglect non-support and extreme cruelty. She said they were married in Hoboken, N.J. Service by public ation was made on Ackerman at ‘5 Hand Street, Rochester, N.Y.
