Thomas II. Hulbert was present to secure Llie approval of his plat of the forty-acre tract between Home and Carpenter avenues and Madison and Van Buren streets. It is the purpose of Mr. Hulbert to put in improvements in his new subdivision that will be a credit and an attraction to this community. On the west side of his tract is a strip thirty-feet the entire length of the property, which is owned by Aurora and Joliet people, and which, it was stated, he would be compelled to purchase at an exorbitant figure. He#said he was willing to pay a fair price, but would not be held up, and he would let the property lie idle rather than stand tor a hold-up. Mr. Hulbert showed a very fair spirit and was ready to make any reasonable concession, but did not wish to be made to do that which was unequal. The board approved the plat|and the work on the tract will soon begin.Incidentally, we might say that in our judgment the board acted wisely in approving the plat, though the village may have to pay for some of the street openings; but when it is remembered what a vast good this improvement will be to this community, it could not be refused without serious damage to the purposes of future investors. Mr. Hulbert, having purchased another twenty-four-acre tract at Austin avenue and Division street with the direct pupose of improving it, if he had received a backset at the outset in having his first plat rejected it would have been a great injury to the town. Let us swallow a few fishhooks if we can get a good-sized muskellunge that will help to feed the whole family—especially during these days of meat strikes. The board adjourned until Sept. 1.
