Aug. 5, 1977Mainers'teached'N.Y. kids thing or twoBy KATHLEEN O’CONNELL Staff Writer EAST LEBANON - Two Fresh Air kids left Peggy and Alan Pickering's Smith Road farm Thursday for the Bronx They left behind the ground fog they tried to catch, the huge barn spiders they loved to watch, and a wonderful playground that has no glass.They also left behind a pig that Nicole Ames, 8, wanted to take home with her.Nicole and her brother Jason, 4, spent two weeks at the Pickering's farm.In that time they saw their first non-coinop washer, learned what lawns and fields are — and that water can come from a well, not iust a city water system, watched hay baled and fed to a beefalo, marveled at the fact that things can be left out at night without being stolen by morning, and learned about crickets.Peggy Pickering says they also overcame their fear of daddy longlegs, saw an automatic dishwasher, and played at Hilton Park Playground in New Hampshire, where they were surprised to see no glass.•Robin, the Pickering’s five-year-old daughter, says she liked having Nicole and Jason around. “They teached me things,” she says, — what they're called. Like “icies instead of popsicles, and Johnny pumps instead of fire hydrants.Jason and Nicole didn't have too much to say about their fresh air experience. They were too busy cuddling ducks, riding bikes, and munching on baloney and cheese sandwiches.Before, I was crying,” Jason said, because I wanted to go home. But we going home.
