By HUMPHREY S. TYLER “ _ HUGUENOT A wail of secrecy Wednesday surrounded the circulation of a petition urging Deerpark officials to block the conversion of the Huguenot Hotel into a drug rehabilitation center. Mrs. Elenore Space of Huguenot, who acknowledged she was participating in the campaign, said she was not its sole instigator. The petition already bears about 150 names she said. Asked if her silence was prompted by fear that publicity would bring pro-center residents to a public hearing Aug. 17, she said, “No, to the contrary, I hope they come.” The Samaritan Halfway society of Fallsburg has requested planning board permission to turn the hotel into a center to treat former teenage addicts who want to stay off hard drugs. ‘Despite detailed published accounts of the society’s center in Fallsburg, several residents said they fear the conversion will result in lower property values, drug trafficking and an increase in the crime rate. — ‘One proponent of the plan, who requested his name be withheld, charged that the town board is under pressure to keep the society out and it is seeking a way to overrule the planning board’s decision, when it is announced. He said the presence of the center in the town would help attract industry because it would show businessmen that the residents are “enlightened and philanthropic.” Both planning board and town board members haven't expressed any opinion about the center except to say they are investigating the society's center in Fallsburg. Only Supervisor Arthur C.Hoagh has said he thinks “‘It’s a good idea’, but added his final decision would come after he made a thorough check on the society. itially 50 former addicts would be assigned to the center. The uni world eventually double, a spokesman for the society said, 6 residents will be allowed to leave the facility for their first several months there and, after that they will only be allowed off the grounds with a staff supervisor, they say.
