r*PUBLIC MEETING CALLED TO DISCUSS ACCOMMODATION QUESTIONPEOPLE SANCTION GRANTING FREE TAXES ANDLIGHT TO HOTEL DINERtRROKOK IMPRESSION HU MUTEDTHROUGHOUT DISTRICTThe town council railed a meet- i ing for la*t Friday night to discuss •with the people of the town the accommodation question. which owing to the closing of the bars itlias been found necessary to ckwe | the two hotels in Wadena. Thetaw allows the municipality togrant free taxes to the hotels thus affected but before offering to dothe feeling of the people was wanted■ cfore any steps were taken. There is a real need in Wadena for a first ela*» hotel such as the Diner was and it was the sense of the meeting that an effort should bej made to keep it open. But therehas been an impression circulated taround the country that the town wac going to grant the hotel amwijnply of the boarding ami lodg*| ing business and thus render con-, d it ions that would tend to keep away the farmers from coming because of the high price of accommodation. However, such was not the ease, nor was it even asked for by Mr Diner in hi? petition which he circulated. All that was asked was what the law prescribed, namely, free taxes and free light.Ae there is need for a first classhotel, so theie is need for a placewhere people can get ac commodations for less money, i Many neople cannot afford to pay f for the accommodation which ti e, Diner would give the public and it was proposed to have as many of these places as was needed.A vigorous effort was made to have the council give their assistance t » the opening of the WadenaHofei but that idea was voted down overwhelmingly. It must be remembered that the Diner can be used for other purposes than a tnere hotel. The dining room has an excellent Hoot for balls and banquets and is modern throughout while theold hotel is unfit for such uses.Mr. Morton proposed a resolution which covers the situation fully and was almost unanimously carried. It is as follows: -That, whereas the proprietor of the Hotel Diner has asked for exemption from taxation and electriclight rateg^ * ^Wheteas the government, by legislation, has legalised such a course of proceedure,We the citizens of Wadena recommend concurrence with the said riMuest in all but exemption from a*ool tax, if the accommodation boird considers such exemptionsan exclusive privilege but that ail other applicants be considered by the Municipal authorities on their merits.LEE-OOEGAARD1Mr. Hans Odegaard and MissAlma IA*e of Keh'inglon wens united by holy matrimony at her home onWednesday, July 28.The bride was dre***d in a green silk dress.
