California’s Bead Sea.The San Francisco Chronicle, in arecent Issue, says: The propejler I locket, which will soon be pitted on Mono lake, will have no trouble about floating, asthe density of the water Is remarkable, being jnsfc. the reverse of that of LakeTahoe, in which the body o! a drowned*person never returns to the surface. An exchange says that for bitterness andpromiscuous* leanness the waters of Mono lake surpass those of the DeadSea* They contain so much alkali thaton a windy day the lake is a regular tubof soapsuds. The* writer has slg^ awall of lather five feet high along the whole of that shore, against which thewaves were boating Occasionally thewind would take up a bunch of this lather os big as a bushel basket and carry it several hundred feet inland. So buoyant are the waters of the lakethat quite a party of men may navigatethem on a raft made of four or five dry cot ton wood poles. Out in the lake areislands of rock (lava-like concretions) through which streams of water boll up.The water of these springsls like that of the lake, but in one; place is a largespring of fresh water. This ig|ar thenorthwest corner of the lake, a|d at apoint where there is eight or ten feet of water. It is a sort of fountain. A column of fresh water, some three feet indiameter, is projected upward with suchforce that it ris.es to a height of at leasttwo feet above the general level of thelake fnthe form of a mound or knoll, and makes a rippling noise that can beheard a considerable distance. But forthe fact that this fountain has a depth of eight or ten feet of water to contendagainst it would probably rise to a con*eider able height1h the air,«?*
