F. Chzbry, Adjutant.THE BATTLE OF OETrVS3lRIUi.Hermes, of the Mercury, thus alindes to the battle of Gettysburg:Lee is believed to be ia Culpeper, to whichrnnt newspaper men are ordering their papers, heard last night some facts m regard to Gettysburg, which throw some light oa our rep alee. Governor Smith says, as I am told, thac we whipped them every day, and that Meade retreated six hours before Lse did. Our ammunition had given oui, and we were compelled to fall back. On the night of the second day’s fight. Ewell received a letter from General Lee directing him to begin the assault at daylight the next morning ; Hill and Longstreet would do the same, the object being to envelop the enemy, cut off hit retreat and capture him just where be was. Ewell opened at 4 o’clock in the morning, and fougbton until mid day before Longstreet fired a gun. Some say Hill was also prompt, but handled bis division badly. Longstreet’a delay may be accounted for by the fact that the enemy was principally entrenched m front, and General Lee waited to demoral zj them with the fire of his guns. Ho saw ihe effect of concentrating artillery at CbaQeel-lorsville, expected much from it at Gettysbnrg, md had, besides, the utmost eonidence m hia iB. Fantry. Hence Longstreet’* delay.
