On Thursday evening,1st instant ate o'slovk, in response to a call for a meeting to organizes Vigilance Committee, a large number of the citi zens of Girard and its vicinity assembled in the M. E. Church. On motion, Col. Asa Bates was called to the chair, and J. H. Martin appointed Secretary. After a brief explanation of the objects of the meeting by the chairman, J. K. Giddens, Esq, offered ,the following res olutions which were unanimously adopted. Resolved, That the citizens of Girard, in gen eral meeting assembled—recognizing the duty of each Southern community, in a time as criti cal as the present, to guard against the presence and the conduct of disaffected or disloys per sons to their midst, who may do serious dam age to the government in ihe struggle with a for eign enemy—do hereby determine to o ites Vigilance Committee of —— citizens, whose du ty it shall be to take cognizance of such persons and their acte in thie neighborhood. Resolved, Thai the Chairman of this meeting appoint eaid eee Committee, and that we recommend to their prompt attention all acts of conduct transpiring here calculated to give aid and comfort to the enemies of the Confederate Government, or to embarrass that Government in the prosecution of the war in which it is now en ded. That we expect every man in our midst to aid us in this movement, and that the action of this meeting be presented to each one for his signature and approval. On motion of Mr. J.C. Harris, the blank in the first resolution was filed with the number 12. The Chairman appointed the following gev emen to compote the Vigilance Committee pro vided for: J.C. Harris, A. J. Nix, Jesse L. Clay, Dr. A.M. Cleckley, Rev. J. M. Watt, J. C.Wor sham, J. K. Giddens,W. K. Harris, Brady Smith, Peter Streer, John Butts, C. B. Lloyd. On motion, the Chairman of this meeting was added to the committee. It was ordered that the Committee have pow er to ON vacancies in their own body, caused by the declension or failure by the members ap pointed to attend to their duties. In accordance with the third resolution ninety substantial citizens of Girard came forward and signed their names as supporters of the move ment. On motion, Resolved, That the papers of the city of Columbus be requested to publish the proceedings of this meeting. ASA BATES, Chairman. J. A. Mannix, See’y.
