‘BY CHUCK POSNIAK Traveling around town every few weeks is a big colorful school bus which doesn’t look m much like a school bus. ' ‘There is good reason for its bright colors and painted win dows, however It is not a school bus at all. It’s a ‘‘Skunk tmobile ” The Skunkmobile is the vehicle which transports The Skunks all over the state. You’re probably wondering why a bunch of Skunks would be traveling around the state in a ‘bus. If I didn’t already know better I would wonder the same thing White Hair Stripe The Skunks who travel in tthe ‘Skunkmobie are not the little ‘animals with the white stripe down their backs They are a stock and roll band with a white stripe in their haw The idea for the gimmick of tthe whitened hair first became in reality in 1965. Larry Lynne Ostricki, leader and lead guitar ist of The Skunks, thought of the idea while he was searching for musicians to start a band. He found Jack Tappy, bass guitarist, after Jack had moved tio Milwaukee, Larry’s home town. After rejecting many drummers they found one who fit in with their personalities. ‘He was a drummer from Mil waukee named Paull. _ After a few months of playing ‘in Wisconsin and Illinois, The Skunks packed the Skunkmo bile and went to California While in Anaheim they ran across a rhythm guitarist origi nally from Milwaukee. This gave the group its fourth mem ber Night Club Circuit For the next several months ,The Skunks’ reputation grew on the Hollywood night club circuit One of their most requested numbers was a song called ‘Elvira’ The song became so popular that the group decided to record it The boys had more faith in the song than they had in Hollywood managers, so they decided to return to Milwaukee. There, they met Jon Hall, owner of a teenage club. Jon became manager of The Skunks, and signed them to a Chicago record company, which recently released “Elvira” on the na tional market. Although The Skunks have a good club sound, the group is able to adapt its sound for teen dances. Good Harmony All four members of the band sing, giving the group good four -part vocal harmony. The Skunks play many styles of music, including English, blues, psy chedelic and jazz. Also included in their repertoire are a few production numbers for which the group often gets special applause With the national release of the group's record and with the gimmick, The Skunks soon hope to reach the top, as other forest creatures — The Monkees, The Beatles, The Byrds, and The Turtles — have done before them.
