The executive director of the Galesburg Human Relations Commission today apologized for statements she made at a com mission meeting Wednesday night criticizing the Galesburg Register Mail. Mrs. Louise Wilder told com mission members last night she believed an editorial cartoon which appeared in the Register- Mail July 28 was an attempt to “drag down the image of HRC,” and that she had no respect for a newspaper or an editor who prints that type of “garbage.” Mrs. Wilder, who met with new members of the commission appointed recently by Mayor Robert Cabeen, said today her comments were in defense of the Human Relations Commis sion’s record in the community and were an emotional response to recent criticisms of strife within the relations panel. Plan Workshops The executive director said t he commission, is planning workshops in the field of em ployment and housing in an at tempt to keep Galesburg resi dents informed of progress and problems in these areas. She said the commission is also at tempting to work with Individu als and businesses in the com munity who have human rela tions problems, HRC, has involved itself in employer-employe relationships, job placement, location of hous ing for families and a number of other areas, she said. Mrs. Wilder said that criti cism has detracted from the ac complishments of the commis sion and may make the work of the new commission mem bers more difficult. She said she was concerned that open criti cism of the HRC may also drive away individuals in the commu nity who would normally come to the city agency for assistance. Attending the Wednesday night meeting were newly-appointed commission members, Mrs. Dar la Blackwell, James Harris, Mrs. Caroline Gotterman and Claude Piggee. Also attending was commission member Luke Anderson. The cartoon suggested that difficulties between the HRC and Galesburg's Equal Oppor tunity Office (EOO) have caused the city agencies to overlook pressing community needs, Mrs. Golterman told Mrs. Wilder Wednesday night she was taking the matter to per sonally.
