Second Cedar Hill Reunion Is Held More than 200 registered at the second annual meeting of the exstudents association of the Cedar Hill School at Camp Alli son held Saturday, with C. W. Adams, 78, who served as chair man of arrangements for the barbecue, being the oldest ex student present. Mrs. Harry Thiers, nee Sadie Merck, who taught the school in 1908, was the oldest ex-teacher present. Miss Vina Adams, 15, of Marathon was the youngest ex student attending. Mrs. Ray Dickerson of Cotter, Ark., travel ed the fartherest to attend the meeting. She is the former Miss Virgina Adams of Camp Allison. Former teachers attending in cluded Mrs. Thiers, Mrs. Gene Lightfoot, nee Vida Anderson; Mrs. Leonard Caldwell, nee Miss Edna Kelley; and Mrs. Roy Val liant, all of Sonora. Mrs. Earl Adams of Camp Allison and Wes ley Rode to New Braunfels. The last Saturday in July, 1951, was set as the time of the next meeting. Appointed to the com mittee for next year were Mmes. Valliant, Lightfoot, Matt Adams, and Willie Andrews and Messrs. Meredith Joy, Matt Adams, and Willie Andrews and Messrs. Meredith Joy, Matt Adams and Gene Adams. Miss Nell Adams presided at the business session. Since the Cedar Hill School District was annexed to the So nora District in 1947 school chil dren go by bus to Sonora and the school building is used as a community center. Joe F. Logan, a Sutton County ranchman and president of the Sonora Lions Club and a brother of Mrs. Belle Kirkpatrick, at tended one session of school at Cedar Hill after he was married and had one child. His teacher was the late R. M. Stevenson. The first school was built in 1882, according to C. W. Adams, on a site about a mile east of Camp Allison. It was of cedar logs with a dirt floor and heated by a fire place. The early school sessions lasted only an a few months with teachers receiving a salary of $30 per month while their board and room took $10 per month. By 1909 the population had moved westward and the need for a new schoolhouse more cen trally located was felt. A new two story structure was erected on the present site. The upper story was used for Masonic hall. The building was razed by fire in 1918 soon after school opened in September. By November a new building was ready and school started again. August 11th, the date of the 14th annual billie sale, has been designated Henry Howell Day in appreciation for the wide radio publicity given Junction and the Hill Country by Mr. Howell of WOAI. Howell is expected to be pres ent for the various entertain ment of the day, including a special barbecue dinner, the sec ond afternoon of the 16th an nual race meet, kid rodeo and jackpot roping, and to attend what is expected to live up to the reputation of being the biggest billie sale in the world. The celebration will open Thursday, August 10th with a big street parade followed by an afternoon of racing, kid rodeo performance and jackpot rop ing. Top goats from the leading Texas breeders of registered An gola will be classified in the morning by the recognized au thority Fred Barwood of Sonora. Six races will be run each afternoon for $2700 with added purses as prizes. Each evening dancing will be entertaiment at the fair grounds pavilion. On Thursday evening the Texas ‘Tophands will play. On the last two evenings music will be by Jimme Klein and his orchestra. Offically starting the annual August celebration sponsored by the Hill Country Fair Associa tion, Thursday, August 10th, will be the big, free feature which appeals to every resident and every visitor, the street parade. Following the pattern of form er years, the parade will form on College Street at 9:30 a. M.. and proceed through town to the fair grounds, starting at 10:00 o’clock, Dr. H. E. Wright, parade chairman said. Prizes will be awarded in four classifications for entries, most original, most comical and best child’s entry. All organizations, business houses and individuals are invited to arrange entries. In fact, every one is urged to arrange entries.
