Horicon Gets First in Clast A By Slight Margin at Waterloo, Sunday; Johnson’s Creek is First in Class B.In the annual contest among membership bands of the Northwestern Band Association, held Sunday, July SI, at Waterloo, In which seventeen Wisconsin bards participated, the Senior Grafton band won second place In Class A, Horicon getting first by a few points. The judges made individual markings by poiutn, then added these points and struck an average. Thus Horicon's was 86, 88 and 92, averaging 88 2-3, and Grafton's was 84, 86 and 87, averaging 85 2-3. Snappy apj^earance counted high, showing plainly that musical excellence is not the whole thing in a prize-winning band. There were twenty-two players in the Senior Grafton band, all home citizens, The selections played were Hungarian Comedy Overture and March Bravura,” both fine compositions and exceptionally well rendered. The writer Is confident that had the outcome of tbs contest rested on musical excellence alone Grafton would have been awarded first prize by a wide margin.Johnson’s Creek band won first in Class B. There were some six thousand persons in attendance, including a large delegation of Graf-tonites.The Racine American Drum and Bugle Corps gave an unique and very Interesting special number and a novelty one-man band amused the ■crowd.Meals were served In the pavilion while hundreds enjoyed basket lunches. After the, con test the Grafton band plared several selections from the basif stand ana In the evening the Horicon band played concert numbers. It Is said that the Grafton band had the disadvantage of being poorly placed, being seventh, immediately following the long special number by the Drum and Bugle Corps, and this did not operate for fair comparisons owing to the interruption. It has been suggested that in future contests all special numbers be presented at the beginning or at the close of Ihe contest, in fairness to all contestants. The place for next year's tournament has not yet been decided.
