Clarence Fink has accepted a posi tion in the State Bank. @§Herb Warren had a horse struck by lightning last Friday in the pasture which was killed instantly. W. C. Bunting left yesterday for the White City where he will vlow the Columbian exposition. Arthur Roberts arrived from Canise tota, 8.D., where he has been sojourn ing for sometime, Wednesday. Miss Mable Hirschsinger returned from Nebraska Monday where she‘has been visiting T relatives for’ the past three months. Miss Belle Klein returned from her extended trip to the World’s Fair and at the summer resorts in Wisconsin, Wednesday. Miss Kate Starr, who has been visit ing in Mason City for the past two months, returned home Saturday. Our townsman, James Doherty, was allowed an increase of pension on Tuesday last, by the department at Washington. A number of Doon ladies were ob served shopping in Rock Valley this week. This speaks well for our mer chants, and adds wealth to our town. Hi, E Rounds and R. BE. Roantree rode their b'cycles up to Doon Monday evening. When they were returning home Herb took a “header’* that came near injuring him seriously. 8. A. Dean of Clear Lake has ac cepted a situation with the Rock Valley Mill Company as night miller and will arrive here in about ten days with his family. Sheldon Eagle: Dr. BE. O. Plumbe of Rock Valley is writing some sensi ble articles on the silver question for The Dr. has undoubtly made a study of the question, and all who can should read his articles. There never has been a harvested crop that the weather has been so propitious for saving of grain as the present one. ‘The grain has all been cut and is now in the shock. Thresh ing will commence in a few days. A load of new oats was on the mar ket yesterday. They were of* good quality] and fair weight. The oats came from a field near Doon, and the yield is on an average with other years. Contractors who have been repairing the north bridge have been delayed on account of material not being on hand. They will fpush the work as fast as circumstances will permit. it. BE. Lance and Peter Sharp, “two grain buyers of Sioux Center, were in town yesterday on business. They reported nearly all the grain harvest ed here and that place. Miss Ella Minard gave a party to a dozen of her close friends on her birth day which occurred yesterday. A light lunch and choice refreshments were served in the evening, and her guests were pleased at the charming way their hostess entertain them. Peter Richter was struck over the head by a piece of scantling wenlded by a big and brawny tramp as he was going home last Saturday evening near the north bridge. His team be came frightened and started to run, which doubtless saved him from being overhauled. Two oily tongued, perfumed Jewish swindlers visited Sibley last Tuesday says the Tribune, and succeeded in victimizing a large number of gullable housewives to the tune of about $25 in an hour. They were selling soap which they claimed was of a very superior quality, and as an induce ment they offered a prodium worth $3, but were never delivered. For the past week tramps of an un usual tough character have been con gregating in and around Rock Valley. On Friday night last a number of them forced an entrance into the house of Andy Dodds. ‘The only person who was in the house was Miss Dodds, who became frightened and left the house by the rear en trance. Assistance was speedily at hand and the rascals decamped with out having secured anything of value. The boat club has decided to make a regular trip every Tuesday, Thurs day and Saturday evening, also Sun day afternoon and evening during this month. The price has been re duced to 15 cents for single tickets or two for 25 cents. It is to be hoped that the club will be patronized dur ing this month while the evenings are so pleasant for boating. Joe Robers had a runaway last Sat urday that resulted in very bad luck for him, he with a stranger whom he was showing the town were driving by Kent’s livery barn when the breast strap broke, letting the tongue touch the ground and frightening the team which started to run. Just as they turned the corner of the Warren block the buggy struck Kessler Bros. dray, which was standing there, over turning it and throwing the occupants to the ground. Mr. Roberts and his companion were not hurt, beyond receiving f of severe shock, but not, so with the§ vehicle. It had the two front wheels smashed, the tongue broken and looked very much like. a wreck,
