and dictionLooking over the pages upon which the history of the court house that has recently suffered the fate of progressing years is chronicled, we find much of interest relative to th caus of its structure, the various events attending the erection of the old temple, and many incidents which occurred therein. In the year of 1863 the board of county commissioners of DeKalbxoun-ty—J. M. Brumback, Amzi Seeley and John Brandon—caused to be entered on their records, on the 6th day of .March, the following entry:“Ephraim Berry and S. W. Sprattt be and are hereby empowered^ authorized and empowered to procure and prepare plans and specificationsand estimates for a new court house*to be built in said county under the direction of said board. Said house to be built of brick with stone foundations, to contain offices for the auditor, treasurer, recorder, clerk of the court, sheriff, three jury rooms and a circuit court room. The whole building is to be fieproof and not to exceed in cost $25,000, and that said plans, specifications and estimates be filed in the office of the auditor of said county on or before the 20th day of April, A. D.,1863.”That was the first step taken by our father’s fathers to erect the historicaltemple of ustice which has outlived its►usefulness and has gone down to make way for a more imposing structure which likewise in years to come, will yield to the increasing demands for stijl a more magnificent and modern edifice. On April 20, 1863, the commissioners met in special session by order of a notice issued by the county auditor* They examined the plans and specifications which had been made by S. W. Sprott and Ephraim Berry, and directed the auditor to advertise for sealed proposals fdr the building of a cou: b use according to the plans proposed, on the 4th day of June, 1863, in the various papers of the county. On th e4th of June of the same year the bids were opened and a contract was awarded ot William Val-leau, John McKay and A. Wheelock. As they were given until December 1,1864, to complete the building, they immediately commenced work, but abandoned the undertaking and turned the contract over to Silver and Wheeiock, who completed the building in the autumn ot the year 1863, at a total cost of $23,372.raze the o a short tv totally des site.
