INDICT i OFFICERSTELLER COUNTY GRAND JURY FIND8 EIGHT TRUE BILL8.SHERIFF BELL IS NOT HELDTwo Months’ Session Finally ResultsIn Bringing Many Charges—FormerDeputy County Clerk Indicted for At*tempted Bribery.Cripple Crook, Colorado.—The Teller county grand jury, after two months of practically continuous Bcsstcn, was discharged yesterday by Judge Shcafor alter submitting its report. True bills were found against eight individuals, six of them public officials. All with two exceptions wore for misdemeanors. The report was a lengthy and v only one, containing fifty-seven pages of foolscap, closely typewritten. Those indicted, together with the offenses charged, are as follows:Edward Boll, sheriff of Teller county, malfeasance in office. The specific charge against Bell is the charging of $9.60 to the county for the feeding of twelve prisoners. This amount hid al lendy been refunded to the county.J. A. Curry, Justice of the peace at Victor, excess charge of fee to the amount of $2.00 and $15.00.S. G. Patrick, Justice of the peace at Cripple Creek, similar charge, the amount specified on two counts being C5 cents and 50 cents.F. O. Veak, constable, Cripple Creek, 90 cent s.F. I*. Shcafor, constable. Cripple Creek, 45 cents. Both of these constables are charged with excess fees.C. A. Glllett, four counts, viz: Malfeasance in accepting the sum of $5 in cases which were dismissed, in thia instance in one case a charge of assault and battery brought by a wife against her husband, was dismissed, the defendant paying the costs. Other cases were similar in that the defendants paid costs, saving the county considerable money.G. S. Hong of Victor, captain Company K. Colorado Nntlonnl Guard, former deputy county clerk, was charged with attempted bribery on two counts. Those of offering $5,000 to County Commissioner W. K. Meek and $2,500 to County Commissioner C. S. Davison in return for a contract to transcribe the records of El Paso and Teller counties.Tom Brown of Coldfield, who was arrested about two weeks ago, had a true bill found against him for the murder of Chris Miller at Coldfield on election day, November 8. 1904.The bonds of the parties were fixed at from $5,000 for Brown to $200 of those accused of malfeasance. Tho charge against Sheriff Bell was immediately nollcd by District Attorney C. C. Hamlin and approved by Judge Shcafor.Immediately after the true bills were returned and informations filed, District Attorney C. C. Hamlin nolled the case against Sheriff Bell. end. in language most sarcastic, referred to the untiring efforts of the jury In conducting a thorough examination. In stating that the case would be nolled he seemed to treat tho investigation aa a travesty on justice, and during the course of his remarks said:“I wish to say, however, that up to the time that my active service before the grand Jury ceased a condition of affairs was disclosed by tho evidence before tho jury in the sheriff’s office which passed my understanding—a condition of graft conducted month after month, aided and supported by perjury, forgery, falsifying of receipt® and records; but it seems that tho jury, in its wisdom, has seen fit to pass over ull of those charges. It has, however, returned one indictment against the sheriff of this county, and lias returned it upon a charge which it would he utterly, entirely and absolutely impossible to convict him before any jury.”
