For Violation of the Fish Law.Upon information signed by Deputy Game Warden Tressler, Wm. Berk* holt/,, proprietor of the lower mill, was arrested lust week on a ehargo of maintaining a dam without providing the same witli a fishway as required by law. There has been much talk of the construction of such a chute for several years past, but as no one was iusistcut the att'air was dropped* Lately, however, the talk lias been revived and the matter was brought to a head by the issuance of a warrant for Mr, BerUholu. The ease has not been brought to trial as yet, a delay be.ing granted until the state warden could cither investigate the merits of the matter personally or pass upon a petition which was recently forwarded to him, asking that the law be not enforced. Those who signed the petition to the commissioner recently argue that it would be of 110 particular benefit to construct a fishway, when the mill is within a short distance of the Minnesota line, a state which does not class pickerel, about the only fish procurable here, as game fish and afford them protection at the spawning season.
