Ir. Darkness exhibited various forms of* animal and vegetable life obtained at Mono Lake. The motile form of bacterium fubc-seens attracted mu eh attention, as did also specimens of a brine shrimp. The “concentric” form of microscope was exhibited by Mr. Hiredi. The greater part of the? evening was spout in listening to a discourse on some of the more especially microscopical features of leprosy. by Dr. Edward II. A ruing, who has recently arrived from Honolulu. where lie lias been studying the disease for several years. Dr. Arning's remarks were listened to with the closest attention, lie explained the difference between the bacilli of ordinary consumption and the leprous bacilli, and related the development and appearance of several cases observed by him. lie asserted that there is tio doubt of leprosy existing in the system of apparently healthy persons years before It is noticed, and cited the instance of a boy who had suffered from a sore when about X years old. after associating with lepers, but this sore bad disappeared after a time and no further symptoms of the disease were manifested for seven years. Dr. Arhing remarked that in Ids opinion the segregation of persons who showed traces which might or might not ultimately develop into tubercular leprosy was impossible.-—fS. F. Call, July I I.
