By KAREN DAILY Star writer Orange and white spray paint ‘marking the roadway at the intersec tion of York Street and Edgefield ‘Avenue identifies the location of a fatal crash that claimed the life of a Beech Island woman Wednesday. Nancy L. Blas, 58, of Pine Log ‘Road in Beech Island, suffered mul tiple internal trauma from the 9:30 a.m. collision, according to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton. ‘She was transported to a local hospital where she later died, police said. Preliminary information shows the Beech Island woman was headed westbound on Edgefield Avenue in a 1996 green Hyundai and pulled into the path of a northbound Chevy work van, driven by Gerald McCarty of Warrenville He was also taken to the hospital. Police said he had non-life-threaten ing injuries. ‘The work van collided with the driver’s side door of the Hyundai, police said, Blas was wearing a seat belt. Both motorists were the lone occu lt. Teddy Umsted, a member of the accident m ovements at the scene of the collision. Reconstruction Team is investigating the crash, said Capt. Wendell Hall, with Aiken Public Safety. The team began its investigation shortly after the crash, collecting data and marking the roadway. ‘Traffic on York Street was diverted for approximately an hour while the reconstruction team was out, and ‘motorists at Edgefield Avenue were redirected at the intersection. ‘The investigation is ongoing, ‘The reconstruction team, led by Lt .Teddy Amsted, will probe for a num ber of factors, including speed and visibility, said Hall ‘Charges, if any, would be filed at the conclusion of that investigation, he added. Officials do not believe speed or alcohol to have been factors in the crash.
