4 SPEAKERS PRESENT CASE AGAINST KNOWLESSanders county residents heard four different speakers at Plains Monday night present the case against the proposed Knowles dam.John French, Ronan attorney, spoke on the “flagrant abuse of bureaucratic powers.’’ “We aresovereign state’s“by tradingquestionableourlosingrights,” he said, them for a few, favors.’Hib Hanson, Poison banker and co-chairman of the Western Montana Citizens committee, discussed the fiscal aspects of the Knowles project, Hanson said, “It’s nothing more than a political porkbarrel proposal with most of the benefits accruing downstream.”The attentive audience of nearly 140 then heard Walter McDonald, St. Ignatius rancher and past president of the confederated Indian tribes, denounce the dam for its “usurpation of treaty rights of our people dating back to 1855.” McDonald told of a recent trip he made to Washington, where he beseeched the secretary of the interior to “consider the moral phase of this unwarranted encroachment of the Indians’ civil liberties and their birthright.”S. John Schile, Missoula, speaking for the Upper Columbia Development council, used charts to illustrate his talk. Schile pointed out the “vast amount of valuable, taxable land which would be flooded,” and then showed the breakdown of tax revenues which would be lost to Sanders and Lake counties “By building Buffalo Rapids 2 and 4,” he said, “nearly $400,-000 in additional taxes would be paid to the two counties annually by the private company which has applied for a license to build them.”Following the speeches, manyof the guests took part in a question and answer session.
