A Hand In HistoryThose 97 “Boy Senators” representing 47 Boys’ States, the District of Columbia and Canal Zone, and the 30,000 youngsters competing for the honor - are note likely to forget the American Legion Boys’ Nation conclave of 1961 in Washington. They came to learn history -and became a part of it. Their visit coincided with the “Week of Decision” in which the President of the United States declared to the world that we would defend Berlin at all costs. They were in the Capital to see the Congress put aside partisan differences and stand in impressive unity behind the preparedness program the President asked them to implement. ~They called a halt in their o^ conduct of the affaire of Hoys' Nation and their campaigning for a new President to pass a; unanimous resolution endorsing President Kennedy’s action -and adjourned to the White House in a body to present the jdocument i They also broughtalong a touch football for the President - a symbol, perhaps, of the understanding between youth and maturity that should never be neglected. As in the past, the young Senators visited their elders on Capitol Hill - state for state -the Department of Justice and the FBI, the State Department, the Supreme Court and the Pentagon. And to round out their indoctrination in Government their Federalist Party beat the Nationalist Party, electing Jefferson James Jarvis of Fort Worth. Tex., President of Boys’ Nation, and Frank Daeman Peas-ley of Cheyenne, Wyo., Vice President. Thus, once more, for the 16thconsecutive year, the congratulations and the appreciation of the nation are due The American Legion for its effective and dedicated continuance of an outstanding, nationwide exerc£B° in civic education. In the farflung Boys’ States, and the ^annual convocation of their delegates*» v».as Boys Nation, the Legion has provided a powerful force to combat juvenile delinquency and an effective school for leadership. In sixteen years, the program itself has made history by inspiring and encouraging young men who are today’s leaders inmany communities across the nation.Representing Michigan as Senators of Boys’ Nation were: Thomas Peyton Towler, Birmingham, and William George Green, Battle Creek.
