These men belonged to the crew of the Gertnan ironclad Grosser Kurfurst, which was sunk in collisionwith Konig Wilhelm near Folkestone.The victims were buried in batches with full naval and military honors, and the tributes of deep respect paid by the townspeople to tha German dead and their cordial and hospitable treatment of tha survivors so impressed Emperor William I., tbs present Emperor's grandfather, that to mark his appreciation hs sent to the vicar of Folkestone a splendidly bound Bible for use In the parish church.Some hundreds of German ssilors were rescued from tha water, the fshermen of Folkestone carrying out their errand of mercy at the risk of their lives, and, the Emperor presented several gold watches bearing the imperial arms in recognition of the gallant services of the rescuers 1 lie German government purchssed a large grave space In tha cemetery, and a monument with tha names of the victims was erected over the spot and it la now proposed to erect a monument to the kaiser’s grandson in the same cemetery and to describe the difference between tha two loci dents—one ending with a Bible and the other in bomba.
