a BLAZE AT JONES’ PHOTOGRAPH GALLERY. A Dangerous Locality—The Chemical Engine Prevents a Conflagration. About half past eight o'clock this morning Jones’ photograph gallery, near the corner of Main and James streets, caught fire. Mr. Ti. WH. Smith, who keeps a tailoring estab lishment in the vicinity, noticed the smoke issuing from the windows and doors of the building. ‘Taking in the situation at a glance, and supposing that no one was in the place, he burst in, but was surprised to find ao man employed in the gallery rushing from one end of the place to the other, but doing nothing towards putting out the blaze. He told Mr. Smith that a lamp had fallen over and set fire to the building, and asked him to run for a pail of water. Mr. Smith rushed out of the build ing, shouting fire! fire !! fire!!! at the top of his voice. A gentleman hearing the cries ran to the nearest fre alarm box, which was 41, corner of Main and Markes streets, and sounded the alarm at the Central fire hall. The chemical engine was the first on the scene, and just in time to prevent a confi gration, ‘The — photograph — gallery is immediately in the rear of A. C. Perry's stationery store, which is connected with a long row of light frame buildings. Had any of those caught it is more than probable that the whole block from James street to Mar ket street would have been burned. The exterior of the gallery, however, being cov ered with zinc, did not burn as furiously as it would have had it been of flame, and the chemical engines, throwing a very good stream, had the fire under control before the hose was laid. The interior of the gal lery was completely gutted, and several hundred dollars’ worth of photograph ap paratus destroyed. Mr. Jones is absent from the city, the gallery having been left in charge of an employee.
