burying of the boy. When the Overseers of the Poor thus denied the tueans of burial, for the honor of Lnlayetre, we must gay ibat means was 60on found to perform that last act of charity which our officers refused to do. Two or three turned out and soon found means among our citizens, not one of whom was asked refused t'tiolr mi to to have the boy interred—in less than twenty minutes means was raised establishing the fact of that pliiianlrophy which has always been the distinguishing mark of on: townsmen. We may also remark, that in our humble opinion, we believe if such men as Messrs. Cox and Hotchkiss, had been in power during the prevalence of Cholera Jasueosoa, Lafayette would hove experienced double as many deaths as took place during the time of the prevalence of that dreadful scourge here; but we hud men then in office who did their duty promptly and with energy—thanks to Providence and them.To convince the Overseers of the Poor, and orhers interested, that our remonstrance is justifiable, wo shall merely refer them to that portion of the Statute which treats of cases such as this article alludes to, and leave the people lu make their own cuimncuts.Revised Statutes of 18-13, page 3G0, chapter 151, section 33, reads as follows, lo-wit;“It shall be the duty of the Overseers of the Poor, on complaint mode to them that any person not an inhabitant of their Township, is lying aick therein, or in distress, without friends or money, so that he or she is likely to suffer, to examine into the case of such person, and grant such temporary relief as the nature of the name may require; and if any person shall die within cny Township, who *ha)l not have money or other means necessary to defray his or her luneral expenses, it shall be the duty of the Overseers of the l’oor of such Township to employ some person to provido for and auperictend tho burial of such deceased person; the necessary and reasonable expense* whereof, shall be paid by and upon the order of such Overseers; and the Board of County Commissioners of the proper County, et any meeting of 6uch Board, ehail examine all claims arising under tho provision of this 6ectioxi» and if found reasonable, shall direct the same to be audited and paid out of dm County Treasury.”MANY CITIZENS.
