WILDHORN RANCHIf you like being in the mountains but hate to get too far from the amenitiesof home, an interesting side trip is to the Wildhorn Ranch which for a few more months will remain open to the general public. The ranch, now owned by Family Leisuretime was originally developed by Hank Hoder in 1928. Ihe scenic valley which nestles the lodge holds three small lakes and a scattering of beaver ponds. Horses areavailable for hire and National Forest skirts the entire back boundary of the property. The lodge itself, a magnificent log structure, offers good food, a full service bar and large fireplaces tor those rainy summer afternoons. On weekends the ranch offers reasonable, all-you-can-eat barbecues. Reservationsrequired. And you are invited to tishthe lakes and tour the premises.During its heyday the ranch was awild place with gangster bootleggerscoming from across the country [(h\ sample and purchase Hank’s firey ana*yillicit brew. Numerous skirmishes withthe Feds gave the ranch a national tree-wheeling reputation. In later years it became a secluded retreat for elite movie stars. John Wayne, Robert Stack and Audie Murphy, among others, were reported to have stayed atthe ranch.
