AREA — The Church of Scientology's own Paul Revere came through the Middlesex County area this week to an nounce the coming of the Church's New England Con ference on Tax Reform. The Conference, to be held in Boston on August 10th, will feature tax reform groups from all over New England and addresses by former IRS agent Stanley Prescott and Freedom of In formation advocates Philip and Sue Long. The event is the third in a series of public interest forums sponsored by the Scientologists. David Gale of Lexington, Mass., dressed as Paul Revere, was here as part of a New England wide tour called the “Liberty Trail.” The tour will take him all over New England over the next few months. During his visit here he distributed free copies of FREEDOM, the Church's national news journal, as well as literature about the Con ference. According to Michael Carlson, the Conference Director, the purpose of the tour and Conference is to let people know about the tactics of the Internal Revenue Service and the current effects of tax reform groups. The IRS has allegedly been witholding information from Congress, media, and the public for years. Because of the Freedom of Information Act of 1967, FREEDOM has been able to obtain and publish a number of ‘secret’ IRS training manuals which are of great concern to the public. Much information of interest to all taxpayers has become available. The Con ference will provide a place for citizens to obtain this in formation.’ In the past the Church of Scientology has released the IRS PAPERS (1972) and the IRS Intelligence Index (1973). The IRS Papers is a compilation of over 200 secret IRS policies dealing with hidden means of handling taxpayers. Since that time, Congress has been in vestigating the IRS with regard to these policies. The Intelligence Index revealed the existence of such training manuals as ‘‘Arrests without Warrants, ’ ‘‘Searches without Warrants,’’ Electrical or Mechanical Eavesdrop ping. The Conference in August will feature a number of notable speakers who will deal with taxpayer related questions and issues. Stanley Prescott worked within the IRS for 22 years before he retired. An article about his experiences appears in the current issue of FREEDOM which Paul Revere gave out. In 1775, on the night of the famous ride, it was Samuel Prescott who rode on to Con cord, Massachusetts, after Paul Revere was captured by the British. At the conference the present day Prescott will reveal what really happens inside the IRS. He currently works as a public accountant representing taxpayers in proceedings before the IRS. Philip and Sue Long are best known as advocates of Freedom of Information. Being their own legal council, they have won many court battles against the IRS in a three year dispute over their own taxes. The Church of Scientology of Boston, whose Division of Charity and Social Services is sponsoring the event, currently has a contributing membership of over 14,000. The Church is one of over 150 Churches of Scientology in the United Dales.
