Since March 24, 296 “freedom riders” have invaded Mississippi, with 292 convicted for “breach of the peace” when they refused to obey officers’ orders to “move on” after entering segregated facilities in transportation terminals.A white “freedom rider” lost an appeal to gain release from jail under a habeas corpus writ filed before U. S. Supreme Court Justice Hugo L. Black. The denial was based on her failure to exhaust remedies available in state courts.However, the petition stated it would be “futile” to seek relief in the state courts.Miss Wyckoff is working off her fine at the rate of $3 a day, the same scale applicable to others being held in jail or the state penitentiary.
