Lloyd Payne Thompson, 91, of Darby, founder of the Hilldale baseball team, died Sunday at his home. Born in Darby Township, Mr. Thompson resided in Delaware County all of his life, most of that time in Darby Borough. He was self-employed as a carpenter and builder and continued at the job until he was in his 80s. Mr. Thompson gave many young people an opportunity to serve apprenticeships in his business. He organized the Hilldale team in 1910 and played shortstop with the team. Later, he became the team’s general secretary and kept the statistics for his team, which played in the former Black Baseball League. A display of the team’s memorabilia and the team’s statistics are on display at the Black History Museum in Philadelphia. Mr. Thompson also was active with the Darby NAACP and lectured and displayed his collections of black history. Surviving are three sons, John L. Thompson of Folsom, Peter Lloyd Thompson of Darby and Robert Joel Thompson of Steelton; nine grandchildren and other relatives. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion AME Church, 10th and Center streets, Darby, where there will be a calling hour from 9 to 10 a.m. Burial will be in Eden Cemetery, Collingdale. Arrangements are by the Williams and Palmer Funeral Home of Philadelphia.
