1 ■; — S ii1 11 1 —THE PARSON'S#PARAGRAPHSBY W. ROBERT INSKOBIBLE INTERLEAVES IIThe second book of the Holy Bible tells the story of how the Hebrew people fled from Egypt. The word Exodus means “Going Out,” which is just what the Hebrew people did, thus leaving the land where they had settled in the time of Joseph. There are forty chapters in this book. The first eighteen deal with historical matters. In them we read of the hardships suffered under the Egyptians after the death j of Joseph. Then the hero of the book of Exodus appears. Here is the account of Moses’ birth and education, fol-. lowed by his commission to lead his people out of their slavery. * Next we see him in contest with Pharaoh, bringing down twelve plagues, as he sought the release of his people. Then came the final plague. After this, the institution of the Passover, and then the departure out of Egypt. This is followed by the great Red Sea event. The Red Sea barred their one way of escape. But Jehovah came to their aid and in a great miracle parted the sea for them. The waters were swept aside that they might cross over on the dry bottom of the sea. However, when the great Egyptian Army tried to follow, the waters rushed back to their original place and the whole army was drowned. This part of the book closes with the slow, tortuous journey in the wilderness to Mt. Sinai. The latter half of the book, the last twenty-two chapters, tells of the code of laws, beginning with the familiar Decalogue, and of the covenant made between the Hebrew people and Jehovah. Moses receives instructions concerning the building of the Tabernacle, the kind of furniture it should contain, the priestly robes to be worn, and information concerning the consecration ceremonial. Thus we read of the Golden Calf, of Moses breaking the two Tables of Stone, of Moses’ method of communicatidn with his God, of Moses’ receiving the second law, of Moses’ carrying out the instructions he had received concerning the Tabernacle. This book is very important. Mcses is truly one of the great men of history. He founded the nation of Israel. More important, he founded the religion of Israel. It seems perhaps that this book could have been well named, “The Life and Work of Moses.” He is an active, dynamic, flesh and blood personality, of about 1250 B. C.; one of the great creative human figures of all human history. It is with him that the History of Israel properly begins.Few leaders have left so great an imprint upon a race of people, or have exerted such a tremendous and compelling moral influence upon races other than their own. Judaism has its real beginning in Moses. Christianity owes him very much. And Islam, the religion of the' Mohammedan peoples, goes back ultimately to Moses. Thus, Exodus records how, through Moses, the Hebrew religion was organized, which religion is very important to all of the Jewish-Christian tradition.
