MONTROSE IS GLAD.Demonstations Tendered Messrs. Buckley and Hammond Over Passage of Tunnel Bill.Montrose, April 29—A big public meeting was held at the opera house Saturday night in honor of State Senator J. W. Buckley and Representative C. M. Hammond for their services in the passage of the now famous Gunnison tunnel bill.Congressman J. C. Bell presided, giving a history of the enterprise, stating that it had received the hearty support of Senators Wolcott, Teller and himself and that the United States government would now co-operate with the state in making all surveys and estimates of the tunnel, bearing the entire expense.He saw this cooperation me»nttne immediate success of the great scheme and a magnillcent future for Montrose and the Uucompahgre valley. He heartily eulogized Messrs. Buckley and Hammond for their splendid work and tendered them the hearty thanks of Montrose county citizensLetters from prominent legislators, regretting their inability to be present, were heard, followed by speeches from well known citizens of Montrose. Messrs. Buckley and Hammond responded in appropriate speeches.Senator Buckley stated that he knew of two companies ready to build the tuunel with private capital and predicted its speedy and successful completionExcellent music was furnished by the well known Aeolian male quartette and the Montrose string orchestra. A reception followed after which the guests of honor, prominent visitors and citizens of Montrose enjoyed a banquet, with Mayor Dungan as toastmaster.
