KOLE-AM drops live morning showDisc jockey Robert X. Brown It gone, and so is station manager Rick Welch. KOLE-AM, one of Port Arthur’s few radio stations, has sailed into troubled waters once again. The station has canceled most of its live programming in favor of signals from the Satellite Music Network. That means the morning show, featuring Robert X., is on hiatus, as well as some planned live “remote” broadcasts from advertisers.Dale Palmer, owner of KOLE-KKMY, says: ‘‘In the past 10 months or so, we’ve tried to make KOLE purely Port Arthur. To be frank, we haven’t had a tremendous response from advertisers on the morning show We’ve kind of pulled back a bit, but KOLE will still be a Port Arthur-oriented station.”In other words, if KOLE were not owned by Palmer’s company, it would most likely be forced to leave the airwaves The only thing saving it is the small operating cost necessary to run a transmitter and pull a satellite signal out of the sky“It just became very cost prohibitive to operate the way we were operating,” says Palmer “The revenues generated by the station wereway below expectations.”Palmer says that Don LaFleur’s Cajun program on Saturday mornings is popular, and it will continue on KOLE. It may even be expanded an hourDannyAngelieThe Tyler-based station owner, who plans to live here and run operations for a while, says he plans to have another local morning program on the air “in the next four weeks.”KOLE, licensed to Port Arthur, is currently operating out of studios in Mauriceville. The Federal Communications Commission had set a deadline for the station to be located in Port Arthur proper by April 1. Palmer says the company is firming plans to build studios at the tower site on Memorial Drive.ODDS AND ENDS: Port Arthuran Elton White has released his “Disco 5000” single.
