SYraQPortsmouth Items.We glean the following items from the Portsmouth Old Dominion of the 27th inst/:-Rebel Mail Captured.—A rebel mail was captured Monday last, about four miles from the city, on its way to rebeldom. The lady having the mail in charge wa9 arrested, together with two others, charged with writing letters.Collision—Tug Sunk.—A collision took place Monday night, in our harbor, between the tug boat “Three Brothers” and the ferry boat “Norfolk,” in which the former was sunk. Only her bow and smoke stack could be seen in the morning. The wreckers are now engaged with a derrick in-raising the sunken vessel.fNorfolk Jail.—L. H. Chandler, civilian was committed to jail by order of Gen. Wild, Monday'night, charged with refusing to deliver certain valuable papers, the property of Minos L. Hallo well, of Philadelphia, the same having been placed in his hands for collection. He was afterwards discharged by an order from Col. Whelden, Provost Marshal.To be Shot.—The sentence of death pronounced upon Jacob Morgan, of the 8th Connecticut Volunteers, charged* with desertion, was read to him yesterday in the Norfolk city jail. He was duly tried by a Court Martial convened for that purpose and convicted of the above crime. The sentence requires, thathe be shot in forty-eight hours after its beingread to him. He sent over to Balfour Hospital, Portsmouth, for the Rev. Like all other Courts on its first meeting, had very little business before it, and adjourned to meet again on Tuesday. Pursuant to adjournment g the Court met yesterday morning. The first It matter that engrossed the attention of the Court was the Grand Jury who, being duly t( sworn, were charged in an eloquent and elab- A orate manner by the Commonwealth’s Attor-ney, Charles H. Porter, as to their duties. 1 The Grand Jury retired to their room, and jj after an absence of a few moments, came into 1 Court and stated they had no presentments to make; they were tlien discharged. Several cases of minor importance were before theftCourt, which were soon disposed of, and the / Court adjourned to meet to-day at 11 o’clock.
