Undefeated BHS team captures league title By TRACY ASHER Dispatch Correspondent BARSTOW — The Barstow High School boys track and field team topped A.B. Miller Thursday under windy conditions to cap an unde feated season and win the San An dreas League crown. The Aztecs (7-0 in the SAL) breezed past the visiting Rebels (5-2 in SAL), 83-43, to end regular season play. The Lady Aztecs also closed SAL play with a win. The local ladies stomped the Lady Rebels 87-39 to finish at 3-4 while the visitors fin ished at 2-5. “We have a great bunch of kids. I am proud to be associated with these kids,” BHS coach Jim Duarte said. “Winning is nice but these kids conducted themselves as gentlemen and that means a lot to me, and I think to the people of Barstow, too.” Senior Ricky Etheridge led the Aztecs in the distance events while Jacob Wilson paced Barstow in the field events. Etheridge won the 800 meter, finishing in 1 minute and 59.49 seconds. The senior was second in both the 1,600 and 3,200 with times of 4:58.53 and 10:53.94, respectively. Wilson won the 110 high hurdles in 17.83 seconds and finished second in both the long jump and triple jump. In the long jump, Wilson leaped 18 feet and 2’4 inches. In the triple he scored 39-4, The Aztecs swept the 300 with Thomas Beatty winning (43.65), Wilson grabbing second (45.54) and Chad Jorden finishing third (48.29). Junior Charles O’Neal won the shot put, with a throw of 42-11. O’Neal was also second in the discus, tossing the disk 118-11. Larry Robin son finished third in the shot, going a distance of 40-2. Donald O’Connor won the discus with a 124-4 throw. Senior Ricky Bell showed the Aztecs’ speed in the 200, winning with a time of 23.06. He also finished a close second in the 100 (11.28), Devin Woods won the high jump with a leap of 6-6. Dennis Chapman was second (6-2) and Derek Dutcher finished third (5-8). Dustin Mayberry won the 1,600 ahead of Etheridge with a time of 4:57.86. Jason Bogart won the 3,200 (10:52.89) while Mike Bilsborough finished third in the 3,200 (11:02.49). Mark Hassell finished second in the 400 (53.04) and third in the 800 (2:04.23). Darius Seymore was third in the 400 (53.19) while Brae Hack barth was third in the 200 (24.07). Craig Guthridge finished third in the triple jump with a distance of 34-11. The Lady Aztecs literally ran away from the Lady Rebels for the 87-39 win. Roberto Chavez had a great day in the field events. The freshman won both the long jump (13 feet) and triple jump (27-11) events. The Lady Aztec finished second in both the shot put (23-7) and the high jump (4-2). Somer Bonar won the high jump (4-4) while finishing second in the 100 high hurdles (19.05). Bonar teamed up with Elizabeth Warren, Danielle Green and Genia Seymore to win the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:30.58. Seymore also won the 800 (2:39.00) and 200 (27.50) and was part of the 4x100 relay team. Green won the 100 (12.88) and finished second in the 200 (28.01). Warren was second in the 400 (1:07.47). Seymore, Warren, Green, and Kat rina Carruthers teamed up for the 4x100 relay win (55.18). Carruthers finished second to Chavez in both the long jump (12-10) and triple jump (27-5) and finished third in the 110 HH (20.08). Angelica Aviles spearheaded the Aztecs in the distance events, win ning both the mile (6:31.78) and two mile (14:09.20). Senior Melissa Madrid was second in the mile (6:35.26) while Christine Russel was third in the two mile (15:28.84). Jay Olegario won the discus (65-8) while teammate Jessica Harrington was third in the event (55-10). Har rington was also third in the shot put (21-64 ) Jennifer Peters finished second in the 300 intermediate hurdles (1:01.10) with teammate Heather Francis crossing in third (1:02.62). Bonar, Aviles, Chavez, Seymore, Green and the two relay teams are expected to compete in CIF after the league finals at Pacific Wednesday. “It was great, last year we won one meet and this year we won three. We have unlimited potential for next year,” BHS assistant coach Beth Injasoulian said. “They are abso lutely the best group of girls I have ever worked with. We will miss seniors Melissa Madrid and Christine Russell.” Both Aztecs squads travel to the Upland Relays Saturday and then travel to the SAL finals at Pacific Wednesday.
