Fisher Branch Blades regrouped in the third period and thwarted a Toulon Tiger bid for the title with a come from behind effort to win the fifth and deciding game of the Western Interlake Hockey League final series at Gimli Arena on April 2. The defending champion, Fisher Branch Blades, thumped the Toulon Tigers 5-3 after trailing 2-0 midway through the second period ,with the series tied at two games apiece. Jeff Blackwood gave the Tigers the lead at 16:30 of the first period when he fired the puck past Clayton Johnson on a pass from Craig McLeod and then the two teams exchanged goals in the se cond period. Blackwood gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead on a solo effort while Brad Malkowich converted a pass from Don Bouchard and Gerald Dandeneau for the Blades’ first counter. In the third period, the Blades made a brilliant comeback taking advantage of Tigers’ porous defence to capitalize on 4 goals. League leading scorer, Don Bouchard, scored twice while Brad Malkowich added two more. With 6:04 remaining, Brad Malkowich scored the winning goal on a beautiful set up by Dave Bouchard and Don Bouchard. Malkowich added Blades’ final marker for insurance. Teulon’s lone goal of the third period came off the stick of Doug Schindler, unassisted. Blades were assessed six minors while the Tigers took nine. To enter the finals, the Blades eliminated the Warren Mercurys 3-1 in games while the Tigers edg ed the Stonewall Flyers by the same count.
